Earlier this week, my parents brought me to the exhibition,
Dreams and Reality: Masterpieces of Painting, Drawing and Photography from the Musée d’Orsay, Paris
at National Museum of Singapore

There are not many pictures taken in the exhibition in this post cos we think the artworks should be admired by your eyes and not thru' the lens.

One of the highlights of the exhibition -
Starry Night Over Rhone River by Vincent van Gogh.
This is also my Mummy as well as my favourite painting in this exhibition.

Besides this,

there were over 140 art pieces (paintings, photographs and drawings) from the collection of the world renowned art museum in France, Musée d’Orsay.

but according to my Mummy's artist-curator friend, half of the works shown are very weak works which are usually kept in the storeroom n not exhibited at Orsay and she commented that it's quite ridiculous that these works are shown in a black box here cos these painters were outdoor artists, which means that their works are meant to be seen under natural light, as the building of the orsay museum permits. So we don't see the real colours.

Anyway, 140 pieces of artwork is rather overwhelming and many children lose steam halfway.

Thanks to the oceanskies' Simple ideas to enjoy the exhibition “Dreams and Reality” better, we got ourselves audio guides which kept me interested in going on with the exhibition.

On top of using the audio guides, Mummy also tried to make me think more and observe more about some of the pieces.

Mummy: (looking at the size of the painting and the lady's dressing and in contrast to the paintinga of poor farmers) Hann, do u think this lady in the painting is a rich or poor person?

Hann: hmm... I don't know... (eyes still on the portrait) oh! Rich! Rich! Rich!

Mummy: Why?

Hann: Because she looks happy.

~Mummy thinks, "Oops! don't know is it a good or bad thing he thinks this way."

Besides the 5 tips by oceanskies, we have one more tip to help children enjoy the exhibition better.

Tip #6 Sit down and use these information boards at the side of the bench.
The fonts are bigger and easier to read than those tiny descriptions at the side of each painting.
Get your child to pick a board and match it to the correct painting on the wall.

Hi! This is Hann's meimei, Jade reporting...

readers of korkor's blog must have missed us in action.
So sorry but School days are busy days for us so can't really update much, but stay tuned!
cos holidays are around the corner.

Here's an update on our family, albeit not very good stuff...

It all started about a month ago, I think in the last week of Sep 2011, Mummy was running a fever but still had to go to school (talk about social responsibility, sigh).
She had to help her students prepare for their N level exams and it was the next day. She asked her students if they'd rather she goes and spread virus or don't go at all and they chose the former.
The fever was mild but it was the aftermath that was the beginning of our horror.

a week later, rashes started to appear on Mummy's limbs. Scary, red rashes those. We shall spare you the gruesome photos of any of us (yes, us. more about that later) with those rashes.
She didn't think much of the rash at 1st cos I had it once (rashes after a fever and our PD said it's normal virus rash).
However, she was also having joint-pains so she went to the doc.
two days of terrible gastric pain also followed.
Doc made her do a blood test cos he thinks it might be dengue fever!
Since doc said that, we decided to isolate Mummy and she slept in a separate room from Papa, korkor and I.

the next day, Papa kena fever too!
and well... the rash came a week later as expected,
but what was not expected (well... not exactly not but we were hoping)
was that my korkor started running a fever too!

Mummy's blood test report

Thank God, it was not dengue fever but some unknown virus.

Nonethless, Poor korkor has sensitive airway, and whenever he catches a virus, it acts up.
So poor him coughed and coughed and coughed.
It was so bad, Mummy was very worried that he might end up in the hospital like the last time.
and since he was also having the rash (poor korkor had it all over his body, even on his face) Mummy was also worried that he'll scratch his face and leave ugly scars on it again.
Mummy is really sad about korkor's scars.

Anyway, he was getting better, the fever was gone (but not the rash) and my parents had taken many days of mc and leave (since they caught the virus as well) so they had to return to work and decided to send my korkor back to school.

On the 2nd day that korkor returned to school, the school called Mummy up at work and told her to pick korkor up cos he is having fever.
sigh...
So off he went to the PD again
but this time, I joined him at the clinic.

Thank God though, through it all, I didn't catch that powerful virus that the whole family, except me, kena.
I went to the PD cos I caught a flu bug.
so who says breastmilk is unless after baby is 1 year old?
I think if not for mummy's milk which contains antibodies against the virus she had, I would have caught that strong virus too.

See me relaxing in the armchair while eating bread.

The virus my family caught is very strong!
besides fever and rashes, other symptoms include painful joints, swollen fingers, frequent toilet visits.
Although we're all the on road to recovery,
My mummy is still having pains in her knees now after almost a month since her fever started.
and my korkor still has quite a bit of phlegm and cough.

but little does she know what it actually served as a base for revolutionary activities to overthrow the Qing (Manchu) dynasty.

and no, Sun Yat Sen was not a communist, he was a Christian.

My ~~baby~~ sister called my name, Hann, on the day she turned 13 months.

before that, Mummy asked if I mind meimei calling me by my name rather than "korkor" and I said I didn't mind.

I'm happy that she can say my name!

actually, I'm very proud of her and often tells strangers of her achievements.

We were thrilled to be invited to an Exclusive Science Centre Bloggers Event!

because I've been wanting to check out the Sharks exhibition but my parents were not so keen.

Long-time followers of my blog might think, "Science Centre" again!?
no worries!
For me, there's always something new at the Singapore Science Centre.

in the end, we've got 40 photos selected for this post!
So read on.

Upon arrival, we were issued tickets to the Omni-Theatre and Singapore Science Centre.

Then, just before we enter the IMAX dome theatre (one and only one dome screen in Singapore), Mummy was shocked to see

that her seat and mine were not next to each other!
She asked the staff checking tickets if we had to follow the seating as printed and the staff said yes but not to worry, the seats are just nearby.

So we obediently went into the theatre and this was how far I was from Mummy.

Later, two other blogger families came in and the children were all seated apart from their parents!
how ridiculous! especially when some of the children were as young as 3 years old and this could well be their 1st visit to the huge Omni-Theatre (5-storey high!).
It can be a scary experience for young children because of the exciting movies, loud sounds and dark surrounding and worse if they don't have their parents next to them.

Anyway, we decided that we'll just sit with our parents and we did just that.

The show started soon and we were shown

the IMAX movie, Hubble.

throughout the movie we all (especially the children) had this Question in their minds:
when are the sharks coming out?

Mummy was puzzled as to why all 3 families thought it was the Sharks movie we were catching and the children were somewhat disappointed that they didn't see any sharks but lots of stars.
Maybe because they used the word "BLOCKBUSTER" Planet Shark Exhibition.

Nonetheless, I love "Hubble", the IMAX movie.

Mummy thought all children, at some point in their life, would have wished to be an astronaut and asked me if I wanted to be one.
When my answer was negative, she persuaded, "why not? Astronauts can go to space you know? and see all those nice things."
"Just now went already what," I answered.

Ha!
how aptly Veronica Heng had put it on the Singapore Scientist (Sci Centre Publication),
it's "the next best thing to being there"!

and how appropriate that The Space Science Exhibition Hall was just at the exit of the IMAX Dome Theatre.
We can continue learning about space!

Think can apply to the Hubble since it follows an orbit too.

There are a lot more exhibits about Space Science here but I wonder why Mummy only captured one of them on the camera.

Next up: Science Centre!

oo... they've got a new buggy.
I was very happy that there's one left for me and hopped on immediately though my mummy said it was too small for me.
I convinced her that I can fit into it and Mummy went to register for it.
(it's free! you just have to leave your particulars at the visitor centre and you can use the buggy for ya entire visit.
They have wheelchairs for loan too.)

butbutbut...
the lady at the counter refused to register me and said I was too old for the buggy.
*disappointed*
I didn't fuss though. I'm a big boy now.

I'd thought women are scared of cockroaches.

there was another species of cockroach there as well.
Mummy asked if I wanted to hold any of these animals and I said no. =p

Another new thing for me -
Invent! It's in you!
a new permanent exhibition at Level 2, Science Centre

Think many visitors to the centre miss out Level 2.
there are actually more fun stuff up there!
so remember to check them out on your next visit.

Inventors Spotlight

Click to listen to the rich stories and experiences of the select group of inventors.
Flight (Take to the Skies!) and photography (Say Cheese!) are just two stories placed in the spotlight to show that inventing is not a solo process; we all play a part to make an invention better.

This exhibition wants you to "realise that the act of inventing is for everyone".

more fun stuff inside but I didn't go in cos I was afraid of the two puppets at the entrance (yes, at 5 years old I'm still afraid of such).

Oh yes, Children, do look out for these stations
where you can do some hands-on science activities under the Volunteer Programme
assisted by korkors and jiejies from Secondary Schools and Junior Colleges.
pss... they get CIP points.

Anyway, when we went in, every1 (almost) was openly taking photos!
many even used flash as it was quite dim inside.

The different species of sharks and their sizes (live size!) in comparison.
Can't imagine a whale shark (the largest), is REALLY sooooo huge!
as big as a school bus (the Sharks movie said).

Jackie Chan is well-known for not using stuntman for his action flicks - even when he has to fight a shark.
but no worries, his shark can use a stunt-shark instead.

"Predator or Prey"
but Mummy thinks they has shown too little about how sharks are preyed on by humans, making them an endangered species.
She thought we will see those gruesome pictures of shark finning but we didn't see any (did we missed them?)

Mummy can't resist buying these two books for some follow up on the exhibition with me

and she thinks the pop-ups are great for meimei too.

We returned to the science centre on another day (oh yah, you can never cover the centre in one day) for the much anticipated
Sharks 3D movie.

This time, I'm not going to take out the 3D goggles half-way, I assured Mummy.
and true enough, I didn't.

and I enjoyed the movie very much!
I actually reached out and tried to catch the fishes a few times. ha.

Mummy wished the 3D theatre was better though.
she thinks the screen is too far, hence too small, to have that the immersion effect like in the Omni-Theatre.
Best seats: centre of the first row on the steps.

They look real from a distance.

Video, an Art, a History 1965 - 2010
A Selection from the Centre Pompidou (France) and Singapore Art Museum Collections

based on the video and multimedia installations of the Centre Pompidou (France) and SAM, the exhibtion recounts the history of this very contemporary field punctuating the main phases of contemporary art from 1965 - 2010.

The exhibition materialised from a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Governments of Singapore and France to enchance cultural cooperation.

We arrived early and were the 1st to enter the Glass Hall at the Singapore Art Museum because the rest of the guest were busy drinking at the cocktail reception outside (see the crowd outside the door).
Me? I rejected the drinks when Mummy offered me and later told her that it was because I don't know how to drink those drinks (red wine, champagne, coke, fruit punch and orange juice).

Mummy is very proud of me because I kept quiet, except occasional whispers to her, throughout the guests' and host's opening speeches.

finally, the speeches ended and once again, the guests flocked outside to enjoy the reception.
They served very intricate food on trays which the waiters and waitresses bring right up to you but I remained nonchalant and pestered my mummy to quickly bring me to see the videos.

The video was about "World Class Society" (it sounded and looked like some1 making an election rally speech) and I had to fill up this questionnaire to get a World Class Society badge.

This book documents how they made

the video "Memorial Project Nha Trang, Vietnam: Towards the Complex – For the Courageous, the Curious and the Cowards" which was shot underwater.
Mummy and I found this video very interesting.

You can really spent a whole day and more just sitting in SAM and watch all these videos.

there are just sooooo many videos to watch!
and we've only touched one of the levels out of 3 of the exhibition.

Well... it may seem like that there's only video watching to do in this exhibition but noo...

Last Friday afternoon, Mummy whisked me off from school to the Kids Arts Village.

and we arrived just in time for the Children's Showtime -

Those korkors + jiejies in black are supposed to be furniture - tables and chairs.
Brilliant, we thought.

the young performers were very good and professional!
One of the dancers dropped a flower and she just continued dancing without it and not looking anxious at all.

after the showtime, we're led to the Children’s Art Gallery

where I was given a worksheet which provided my mummy points of discussion on the art pieces

me looking at the exhibits.

and we've got to sketch our favourite piece of artwork on the worksheet.
My favourite is this Dinosaurs showcase.

but Mummy think it may not be there anymore this week cos there is a change of theme at the kids arts village every week.

I had fun at the Kids Arts Village though Mummy thought it was not as fantastic as she had expected.
Oh well, what kids think in this village is more important. ha.

Realised that I have not been blogging about my outings and quite a few people have been looking up my blog for the Kids' Arts Village.
Sorry that I took sooooo long to put this up.

Here we go!
1st installment of the Festival Village:

After waiting for 3 days at 3 different locations, we finally got to board the Fun Vee Bus FREE! for the Festival Village's opening (13 - 15 May 2011).

Not that it was super popular (you can see that the seat are mostly empty), but because instructions on where and when to board the Fun Vee was not clear! plus there was not enough publicity about this free Fun Vee pick up to the village.
My parents think the bus company, as well as, the village organisers are not sincere about giving this free pick up service.
In fact, we were the only passengers, beside the arts fest volunteers (in pink), for most of the journey until a couple board the bus at the 2nd last stop.

Nonetheless, we're still thankful that we finally (yes, after 3 tries over 3 days) got to be ferried in the Fun Vee to the Festival Village @ Esplanade Park.

Bet...ween 5.20 - 5.30, the bus will be at Suntec City, and from 5.30 to 5.45, we'll be at Marina Bay Sands! The cycle then begins at 6 and 7- so be there early or be square as traffic tends to be unpredictable!"

It was just a trip to NTUC Fairprice at Junction8 to get milk and bread but...

This caught Mummy's eyes - $1.90 for every book!
including Disney series like Little Einsteins, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and My Friends Tigger and Pooh which were sold in the previous sale I mentioned at $2.90 each.
Usual price for these are $5.90 each if I'm not wrong.

Now all these books are going at $1.90 each!

Having learnt her lesson, This time Mummy grabbed all the titles of the Little Einsteins before the sale is over and you can never find this kind of price again.

They've got Chinese books too!

Mummy didn't get those cos she thinks they're too chim for me and they are lined with hanyipinyin so she doesn't like it.

So have you wondered where the Old Airport was?

It is actually the Old Kallang Airport, used as the headquarters for the People’s Association from the 1960s until 2009.

Kallang Airport was Singapore’s first civil airport, opening in 1937. Built on reclaimed swampland along the Kallang River, it also included an anchorage for seaplanes (wow!), and was described at the time as the finest airport in the British Empire (double wow!).
The old runway was transformed into Old Airport Road.

A children's art workshop

Story telling
followed by

silkscreen printmaking, pointillism, finger-printing, relief modelling (and so much more) in this hour-long workshop inspired by the story of the Wizard of Oz.

Just for the record, meimei's eyelashes were quite short at birth unlike Hann's but is slowly catching up and is quite long now.
Thank God for beautiful babies!

ANNOUNCEMENT

FREE ADMISSION TO NHB MUSEUMS FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS
W.E.F. 1 JUNE 2010

With effect from 1 June 2010, all students and teachers from local primary schools to tertiary institutions will be able to enjoy free admission to National Heritage Board (NHB) museums.

This free admission is applicable only to the NHB museums' permanent galleries and not for special or blockbuster exhibitions. Only Singaporeans or Permanent Residents who are teaching or studying in Singapore schools are eligible for this free admission. For more information on the policy, please click here.

All our museums are also now Wi-Fi enabled and thus teachers can surf the net freely in any of our venues. This will enable teachers to conduct classes within our galleries and thus make history come alive for their students.

Mummy tried to teach me how to play on the keyboard with both hands simultaneously but I somehow just couldn't get it.
She was clueless about how to get me to play with both hands.

Her friends gave suggestions - play on each hand separately 1st (which I did well), then combine; listen to the CD and play left hand only 1st.

I did none of those.
cos playing on each hand separately then combine didn't work for my mummy so she didn't think it'll work for me.

so she just left me alone and thought she'll let my teacher at Yamaha do the job.
but Teacher still didn't really teach how to play on both hands during this week's class.

after 3 days of practice, I can finally play one whole song with both hands simultaneously.

Reason? I had a little motivation.

a cute toy dinosaur - Blue Pal, I call him.

my parents bought it and my papa told me that if I can play on the keyboard with both hands, I can open the box.

lo and behold.
I hit the keyboard the very day we got home from buying Blue Pal,
and I immediately can play both hands simultaneously!
Mummy was amazed!
and wonder was it that I didn't want to play at first.
I didn't get to open the box that day though
cos I'm not playing well enough yet.
after practising for 3 days, I can play the whole song with both hands simultaneously so I got to open the box.
Yeah!
I love my toy dino.

We were invited (this time not by virtue of my blog) to the Opening of

Imprints: Designing from Memories.

and the answer to 3, 2, 1 is a Three-Tier Awards Rostrum/ Winners' Podium.

Its function at Imprints is, however,
1. a speakers' rostrum,

2. seats for tired legs,

3. elevated platform for short photographers. haha.

Yup. Form and Function - these are what industrial designs are about.
Imprints is the showcase of the Little Thoughts Group, 20 local industrial designers, who transformed objects from Singapore’s cultural past into innovative modern-day treasures.

There are 20 or 19 of these modern day treasures and if I were to show them all here then you won't have to visit the exhibition.
So I'll use the 3, 2, 1 format to introduce some of these designs on my post.
(actually you can check out all the designs online)

THREE
3 designs we ~~laid our hands on~~ tried out:

3.1 Kandil
by Lee Leong Chye

inspired by old pressurized kerosene lamps.
Mummy loves it new wooden frame.

Papa, will you consider getting one for our new balcony?

3.2 父母椅 Fu Mu Yi (Parent’s Chair)
by Yang Tah Ching

Uncle Yang complement the classic Mu Zhi Yi 母子椅 (mother-child chair) (foreground) with Fu Mu Yi 父母椅 (Parent’s Chair) (background).
母子椅 (mother-child chair) can act as a child seat or a stool
while Fu Mu Yi 父母椅 (Parent’s Chair) can either be used as an armchair or flips over to be used as a table.

Hey papa! we can use these for our balcony too.

3.3 Tze Kor Saver
by Erene Teo

It's basically a coin bank lah.
but you can see the coin goes down the board like a pinball, like the Dino Coin bank Thomson Pediatric Clinic had in their previous location.

Hey Erene, you can sell this product to all the pediatric clinics, GP clinics and wherever kids frequent!
sure make $$.
the buyers I mean. haha.

2.1 "Ants Can't Swim" Condiment Holder
by Lee Yun Qin
the tray has a moat which keeps ants out from the condiment.

Yun Qin jiejie, my grandparents and my mummy's grandma used to put bowls in saucer of water to keep ants away from the food too.

2.2 Glowbelly Steamboat

by Tan Lun Cheak

How ingenuous!
when not used for cooking or dining, GlowBelly steamboat can be flipped around to function as a beautiful lamp.
saves storage space, huh?

ONE
1 thing my Mummy wanteda get for my new room

Bobo - a piece of cloud to bring back the fresh air from good old days

Yat Gao Wan 一块云, my mummy calls it,
bobo is a cloud shape air filter doubling up as light. It makes use of high tech filters from Totobobo Mask® to purify polluted air.

Nice right?
concerns: if we wanta achieve this lighting effect in my room, we'll need a few of these
and how are we gonna conceal the wires and how much will it cost to get them and maintain them.

Baking Workshop.

Ah Yi, my assistant for the day, helping me put on my apron and chef's hat.

Can you see the from the photos that my friend, Cherrlyn, is much more "pro" than me?
She can do almost everything independently while I need my assistant's help in most tasks.
This is her 5th or 6th time at Bakerzin's Baking Workshop.

And what's meimei doing while we're busy?

sleeping.
Actually, she fussed and drank milk before that.
Mummy sometimes feel bad that she has to drag miemei to everywhere I go.

1st, you gotta decorate them with icing.

next, put some glue, I mean icing,

and stick them to the cake cups.

The workshop's really hands on and there's not much free time except the time when we're waiting for the cake the bake.
While waiting, besides icing the marshmallows, we take lotsa photos too.

Cherrlyn can't wait to taste her cakes.

Love the baking class and I've been asking mummy how come we're not going anymore.

We saw a horse!

Seriously... a horse in a school campus!?

Edith occupies a purpose-built stable with a horse and "dialogues" with the horse.

Think she was reading "Black Beauty" to the horse when we were there.

Liang interrogates the concept of painting by displaying the edges of hundreds of strips cut off from the canvas. By then drawing the image on the surface, she disrupts what is conventionally understood as integral to the totality of a painting. This exploration enables the priority of the medium to be reclaimed. Moreover, in so doing, such an approach reduces the artist’s own intervention, shifting the viewer’s attention to a space of negotiation between the surface and edges of a canvas.

Penguin Wonderland

From the comments on my last post on Jurong Birdpark, it seems many think the Birdpark is quite a boring place.

I suppose Penguin Wonderland is an effort to bring in fun to the birdpark, also in line with Christmas.

1st up:
Experience Snowy Fun
weekend snow foam playground at the normally tropical fountain plaza (think it's the water play area I posted on).
Catch the snowflake showers happening every half-hourly from 11.30am to 4.00pm.
There's Water spewing from the fountain jets so do bring extra clothes or wet suits.

shower facilities are available at the Songbird Terrace.

Note: Activity for kids below 1.2m. Parental supervision required.

Date: 4 – 26 December Weekends Only (why like that?)
